Fake'mon, Anyone?

Post by gestaltScribbler on Fri May 31, 2013 7:33 pm

So, I don't think it's any secret...

That I really like to make Fake'mon.

It's fun. Really fun. I figured I'd make a place to brainstorm them here. Heck, maybe with the creative juices flowing in this community we could end up with our own region at the end of it. Anybody feel like cooking up some monsters?

I can not see the whole image. :'/
I do think the two at the bottom right and the top middle one are really good. They have a really authentic look with them. The others loo, awesome as well! :')

I might make something for this later!

I am such a huge Pokemon nerd it's not even funny. Actually, yeah, it's a little funny...No. Maybe.

I might get in on this if I decide that for some reason I am good at arts.

You don't have to be good at arts to come up with awesome concepts. I can do a sugimori style livestream to show how I make mine if that would help, too.

Flarakeet, a Fire/Flying type. Normal on the left, shiny on the right.. I have two more starters in the works, then I think I'm gonna be done with base starters for a while. I'll work on some evolutions after that, I think.

Very interesting. I like how the Fire typing isn't really the first thing you notice.

I've always liked to make Pokemon concepts out of type combinations that have never been done in the games.

For example, a Ghost/Steel type that would be based off of a haunted suit of armor (Midknight? Helmour? Spectralot?), or a Ice/Rock type based off of a mountaineer (Peakaxe? no clue for names).

Yeah! Unusual type combos are a bunch of fun. Once I get done with this set of starters (and maybe some evos), some cool type combos should definitely be on the horizon, dude. Anyway, meet Nymphilisk, the water starter of this group. Once I get the grass starter done I'll make some Poke'dex entries and such.

Aaaand there's Pepilope, the grass type of the trio. Man that went fast. I'll get a template for these and some dex entries at some point in the near future.

Super cool.

I'm assuming you're doing level up moves for them as well?

That seems like best next step. I have no experience with it, but may I can mock some up and throw them up here for feedback. Also, I made Fake'mon dice for fun.

The MSPA Forums used to have a tournament every so often based around the idea of creating new Pokemon.

Was something I entered into one of them awhile back. I don't remember much about it except it being Flying/Fire.

Sigh... I guess I will get in on this...

Guinechi, the shrub Pokemon.

Normal / Grass

Guinechi has long leaf like fur that overtime collects seeds and moss which begin to grow on it. This hair even grows over it's eyes. Guinechi typically live in tall grass where they enjoy sleeping in the sunshine. It is very easy to trip over one as they their fur allows them to blend in with other plant life. Guinechi are rather slow, except when they are hungry, in which case a single one has been known to eat an entire acre of grass in under an hour, before returning to lazing about.

If anyone with the proper drawing skills is looking for inspiration let me suggest a couple other not seen in pokemon type combos.

Fire/Water - Think steam.
Normal/Ghost - (Since generation 1 I've always considered these two as opposites) Seeing as it's only weakness would be Dark type, consider this an especially innocent pokemon.

For the Normal/Ghost type, I envisioned a slightly angelic looking pokemon. The first stage would have the shape of the ghost decorations in the spoiler, and I envisioned the third stage to be like a Valkyrie, with white and gold being the prominent colors.

Spoiler:

As for the fire/water...

Spoiler:

(Not my design.)

Hey GS -- these designs are pretty nifty, but I think it would be worth taking another gander at the Ken Sugimori style if you're wanting them to look authentic. Right now the eye styles you're using are rather removed from what you see in the pokemon games, which makes it difficult for me to imagine them AS pokemon.

I think there's probably a lot I need to learn about the style, eyes being one thing. Another is the shading style. Mine works on very simple forms, but doesn't capture the painterly overlays the sugimori's does. My lines are clean and crisp, but maybe a bit too large and a bit too black. I think I'm going to try doing one from the ground up in photoshop and see what comes of that when I can find the time.

Mind if I grab one or two and see what I can do with them? It'd be fun, haha.

Yeah, Sugi's lines are paper-thin. The shading is also a little more complex than it looks, I think.

Aaaah, I got all compulsive about it. Here's a few sketcharoonies. Anyone want to grade my performance?

It's worth keeping in mind that the shapes of things in Pokemon are always quite rigid, unless it's a GRIMER or something. And even then, stuff is usually rather well-defined.
